As a Bay Area native, it would be sacrilegious to not include Karl the Fog on the best cloud list. Karl makes Bay Area summers truly lovely by allowing the sun to shine and provide excellent daylight warmth, while cooling down the Bay in the evening to make sleeping cozy and pleasant. Karl also visualizes the beauty of the fluid dynamics of the marine layer as it pushes through the Golden Gate and over the hills of the Penninsula almost every evening.

SpaceX really knows when to time their launches. I knew that I had to see the first west coast return to launch site (RTLS) landing and also knew I was in for a show with the evening lift off time. I was still blown away with what I saw!

The immediate turn and burn of the booster after stage separation would guarantee plume interaction between the first and second stage. The sunset launch would mean that the sky would be dark from the ground and the plume would be illuminated at 100 km up. This meant that the plume interaction would glow, brilliantly.

Just like other amazing cloud experiences, the best clouds happen at the right time. This one was taken flying out of Oakland at sunset on a relatively unstable Spring day. What a beautiful place I get to call home!
